Apple Story is about soil-healthy farming—-also known as regenerative farming—-of apples in this case. Regenerative farming allows crops, pollinators, local animals and hoomins all to survive well—all while healing the soil.
I've done several branding illustrations for the Bellwether Farms artisan creamery product line. I'm happy to say that my illustrations, on the great package designs by Mark Oliver Inc., have contributed greatly to the substantial growth of the company and the expansion of the product line.
I was inspired by the rustic artwork in early American childrens' primers which suggested the hand crafted quality of all Bellwether products.
I also did a logo for The Callahan Foundation showing the matriarch of the family holding a baby lamb.
We won a Gold Medal for Branding from Graphis for this body of work.

Illustration for strawberry jam label, inspired by antique embroidered pillow cases to evoke a home crafted feel.
I illustrated this rustic olive tree logo for the Regioni d'Italia line of pastas and sauces for Cost Plus World Market. The idea with the rustic tree was to evoke the old-world heritage of Italian foods.
This is another poster is my environmental series. I created this infographic as an engaging educational tool to help explain what children and adults can do to help monarch butterflies---whose population is plummeting---survive.
The idea was to make it fun, informational, not depressing and to get people planting milkweed!
I've also designed t-shirts, recycled shopping bags, mugs etc.
My client for this project: MONARCH BUTTERFLIES!
I've been working on a series of environmentally-related posters, to be used for membership, sponsor development and fundraising drives. This one is in support of the huge project of restoring 51 miles of the Los Angeles River.
This project will include the planting of native trees and plants, creating much needed habitat for wildlife, as well as recreation for Angelenos. WHO KNEW you could kayak on the river? And fish?
The frog icon is a reference to the neighborhood right on the river called Frogtown which has been a main gathering place for diehard river restoration supporters. I believe it's called Frogtown because long ago, there must have been lots of frogs in the river that you could hear at night.
I've also done a product line including t-shirts, recycled shopping bags, mugs, gift cards etc.---all for fundraising and awareness raising.
Logo for the Washington DC Childrens' Museum of a frog on an antique bike, tying in the current day with days of yore.
These are a couple of the illustrations I did for “Bold” cookbook. There are others in my portfolio, too. I did so many illustrations for this project, that my illustration style actually evolved in the middle of the project. I always do pencil sketches of all the illustrations first. Then I go back and start inking all of them. After I'd finished over 100 pencils, I looked at my early ones and my style had evolved to something looser and more gestural, which I liked better. So I had to redo the earlier sketches. Anyhooooo, it was a fun project.
Farmers' markets seem to call to mind simpler times with wholesome food, local growers you get to know as well as a feeling of community. I created this signage for Oak Tree Farmers' Market reflecting those qualities.
Illustration for a peach farming family. Wanted to keep a local, organic, farm-to-table feel to it. And, include our valuable pollinators, bees!
Behold my self portrait dedicated to all illustrators,
especially those who work with the assistance of their kitty.
Teddy’s specialties include art table hogging and reorganizing
my pens, pencils and paintbrushes onto the floor.
Thanks for all the help, Teddy!
Several illustrations from "Bold" cookbook for Workman Publishing.
This is another in my environmental poster series. The Eleanore Rowan Foundation is a nursery specializing in California wild flowers and native plants. Such plants provide much needed habitat for indigenous birds, butterflies, pollinators and other wildlife.
The California state flower is the California poppy which is the main subject of the poster. I also included other indigenous plants and wildlife.
I also applied the image to recycled bags, t-shirts, cards, etc. to be sold in the gift shop. The image and products are used for fundraising, membership drives and increased awareness of what the foundation's purpose is. The foundation has an outreach program to local schools where the image helps inspire and educate the children about nature and conservation.
I created a diptych version of this imagery for a print publisher. I was inspired by vintage passport stamps and luggage stickers to accent my illustration of international travel destinations. Client: Gango Editions.
This is one of my favorite types of projects. I got to combine my skills in illustration, type design, pattern design and icons all in one. Labels and mini-posters for Fresh Market.

I have a range of illustration styles. This one's inspired by American Shaker folk art from the 1700's. My more contemporary interpretation on this style was created for a catalog company, Plow and Hearth, that has an American folk art-style product line of home acessories.

This hen is one of a pair of signage/posters for Tuthill's Market, purveyor of organic and locally sourced foods. I was inspired by the old metal signs we used to see at markets and on the sides of barns.

A series of 3 illustrations for a newspaper advertising campaign, depicting various urban and rural neighborhoods where BG&E supplies utilities. Client: Baltimore Gas & Electric.
Menu cards for Cucina Rustica Restaurant. I was going for a look inspired by rustic Mediterranean country living in Italy.
Paula's wanted something for their packaging that would evoke home-canned preserves (and pie fillings), just like grandma used to make. I created this series of the four seasons in a naive woodblock style. Early American fraktur art, which was created by the Pennsylvania Dutch between the mid-1700's to the mid-1800s, was my inspiration. I love the naivete of folk art, in general.
This lobster and the crab in the next image were created for a cookbook. I adapted the images into posters for publisher, Gango Editions.
This crab and the lobster in the previous image were created originally for a cookbook. I adapted the images into posters for publisher, Gango Editions.
From a series of sea creatures done for cookbook illustrations for Workman Publishing, these fish images were adapted for casual melamine dinnerware.

For this project, I did the food illustrations inside the book as well as the cover. The art director wanted some sort of border on the cover. Inspiration for me came from the vintage and often quite worn tile floors you see in some Puerto Rican buildings. I did a sun motif with warm colors to reflect the Caribbean locale. Client: Running Press.
This heirloom tomato was one of many food illustrations for the cookbook "Puerto Rican Cuisine in America."
I’m working on a series of cat mini-posters inspired by 16th-18th century Mughal paintings. The decorative, miniature Mughal paintings were popular in South Asia and including Persia. Perspective was not anything I've ever seen in a Mughal painting and so you see sort of an odd way the floor and wall all sit up in a not-realistic way. Bad kitties of the world unite!
Both Japanese and Chinese design were inspiration for this pattern for Persimmon Moon organic soap packaging.
Both Japanese and Chinese design were inspiration for this pattern for this Persimmon Moon design I adapted for a monochromatic coir door mat.
Originally an illustration in "Bold" cookbook for Workman Publishing---this recipe was for Louisiana seafood---I've adapted it and produced it as a poster available for sale on my website.
Here's a grapes and grape leaf pattern fitted into a chevron-shaped badge for a wine label. I like the designer's concept of an old-world family badge or crest. Client: Paulette Traverso for Dreyer Sonoma.
Graphicy Valentine's Day pattern for a card for Sellers Publishing.
One of the illustrations originally used in a large product line for Duty-Free Shopping Okinawa.
I designed a custom wallpaper pattern and border for a private client's home. She loves the Arts & Crafts Movement style and wanted her own custom wallpaper. I was clearly inspired by William Morris. This is the border pattern although these are not the colors she used in her home.
This is the cover and a spread from this tastefully designed cookbook for Workman Publishing for which I did about 130 illustrations. It was written by 2 alumna of Chez Panisse, world-famous restaurant in Berkeley, CA. Although we had only 2-color printing inside the book, I took some of the illustrations and rendered them in more colors as you can see in some of the following samples.

This strawberry bunch was meant to be evocative of embroidered vintage linens like you'd see on grandma's kitchen towels or pillow cases. The look is inspired by early American folk art. Client: Strawberry Hill Farm.
Poster design for Lucienne's Apple Tarts. Inspired by poster art and signage of 1800's France.
Tone on tone pattern of kitchen foods, baking ingredients and utensils for Albertson's bakery line. Designer: Amy Knapp.
This illustration of a campanile clock tower was done in a style reminiscent of Medieval woodblock prints for a wine label. Client: Campanile Wines.
This illustration was originally done for a cookbook and was later adapted for a mini-poster.

I was commissioned by Pebble Beach Inn to design a poster for a wine tasting and dinner at the resort. Mercedes Benz was one of the sponsors of the event. Featured chef was Nancy Silverton. I love the design sense of Medieval botanical woodblock prints where the image fits into a space instead of cropping off part of the image.
Illustration for Lulu Farms shopping bag.
I illustrated a boatload of products and patterns for this line of foods and soft goods for Duty-Free Shopping, New Zealand. Cookies, flavored oils, chocolates, teas, apron, oven mitt and potholder, towel and trivet. Designer: Amy Knapp.
I originally did this image as a greeting card. I love the Arts & Crafts Movement and this image was inspired by that style. I added the texture and staining to make it look like an antique kitchen tile.
One of a series of illustrations I did for a cookbook.
I did a series of illustrations for a home development company, Dakota Homes. This particular development was for homes with an Arts & Crafts Movement feel to the architecture. I did the illustrations to emulate an Arts & Crafts Movement illustration. Had to include the kitty.
Did this stamp-like illustration for the Inco Homes newsletter.
This was a blank seasonal greeting card for Sellers Publishing.
I created this New England village illustration for the Dartmouth Medical Center's letterhead and other printed material. This type of bold, simple and rustic look was inspired by the work of artist Will Bradley, (1868-1962) an American artist, illustrator, designer, printer, typographer, filmmaker and art director in the early 20th century.
This was a comp done for Subzero Design for a presentation to Sun Meadow (food distribution company) for use on packaging and on their panel trucks.
This is a wave icon I did that appeared in one of my commissioned art prints---this one for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Many of my vintage art prints have been strongly influenced by Japanese woodblock print art of the Edo period (1700's Japan). Instead of representing the ocean waves in a more literal fashion, I created this symbol of ocean waves. You can see the art print here.
It's rare for me to paint, but I painted this thank you card in gouache. The style is inspired by early American Shaker art. A naive Shaker look is all about squeezing the entire story into a space and not cropping anything off.
Did these for some Fedex collateral material. Illustrations giving a feel for the worldwide destinations that Fedex reaches.
I did several illustrations for Sanwa Bank for newspaper advertising that was talking about their community banking. As in the illustration for Dartmouth Medical Center, This type of bold, simple and rustic look was inspired by the work of artist Will Bradley, (1868-1962) an American artist, illustrator, designer, printer, typographer, filmmaker and art director in the early 20th century.
This Tuscan villa came from a series of cookbook illustrations, in this case, a section on Italian cooking. Client: Workman Publishing.
From a contemporary Shaker style home accessories collection, these are a pair of kitchen linen designs.
Like any graphic fanatic, I love love love letterpress printing. A Scandinavian theme for Christmas seemed like a good idea. Did coordinating stickers for the envelopes. Clients: Digital Engraving and me.
This is sort of along the same lines as the Walking Girl Christmas card. Scandinavian folk art feel.
Raccoon with snowshoes in the forest.
Got to do more letterpress printing on this Christmas card. Clients: Digital Engraving and me.
Holiday Card for Rik Bessor of Bessor Joseph.
